The
Russell Terrier was accepted into the American Kennel
Club’s Miscellaneous Group as of January 1, 2010. The American Russell Terrier Club, AKC Parent Club for the breed hopes to move
out of the Misc. Classes as soon as possible and into
the regular Terrier group competition.
The
Russell Terrier is a small, active and game little terrier
with all the hunting skills of it’s larger cousins
the Parson Russell Terrier and the Smooth Fox Terrier.
The breed originated in England and is said to be a mix
of the Smooth Fox and the Sealyham Terrier.
The
Russell Terrier stands no taller than 12 inches and not
smaller than 10 inches at the shoulder. The Russell Terrier
presents a slightly longer body proportion displaying
an overall rectangular appearance. The color is to be
predominately white with tan, brown or black markings.
The Russell is not a quarrelsome dog and lives and works
happily with other dogs. He is a wonderful, loyal and
loving pet that wants to be at your side and under your
blankets.
The
size disqualification of the AKC Parent Club Russell is
very important. This is to keep it separated from the
Parson Russell Terrier and the often larger Jack Russell
Terrier in the rest of the world. The Russell is a distinct
breed, smaller, longer, straight legged without the achondroplastic
legs of the common Jack Russell barn dog.
McGypsi
is pleased to participate and assist the American
Russell Terrier Club, ARTC, in achieving this important
goal. We have added to our ranks the beautiful Elk Creek
Peek a Boo of Mcgypsi.
